Extra, extra… or not

February 20, 2017

Been shirking my duties as a blogger here for any number of reasons: working on my own book, looking for full-time work, other blogs, ranting on Facebook (not necessarily in that order). But one of the things I wanted to mention was the misguided attempt by MLB to try to cater to people who maybe […]

(Note: I published this piece on one of my other blogs, The Worried Journalist. Just call me Double-Duty Kaplan.) When I was a kid I once got in in trouble for spending twice my allowance because I bought the latest issues of Baseball Digest and The Sporting News on the way back from running errands. […]

There’s a link in Graham Womack’s piece on The Sporting News site that will take you to a similar ranking of “the best baseball movies of all time.” I wouldn’t have raised a peep if they substituted “favorite” for “best,” but you know how I feel about superlatives; I’m not going to let this go […]

Had a mishap at the gym yesterday and went to the CVS this morning on my way to work to pick up an ace bandage. I passed by the magazine section and there, beckoning like a siren, was this   Welcome back, old friend. First up: TSN has picked up the mantle from the old […]

Forget the first robin; this is my measuring stick. I’m savoring this. Every year I  promise to study these annuals, to really get a better grip on who’s who and what’s what. This time I mean it. One of the first things I look at every year is the list of milestones, a holdover from […]

Fill in the blank

March 18, 2010

Had to get a tire replaced this morning. While sitting in the waiting room, I picked up a recent copy of The Sporting News which carried feature about the questionnaires the publication would hand out to players each year in preparation for the defunct Baseball Register. This article included reproductions of the forms from Willie […]

I have a copyright infringement issue. In describing the final weekend of the NFL regular season, the Dec. 29 digital issue Sporting News Today caries the headline “Crazy ’08.” Problem is, that title was already taken, by Cait Murphy in her excellent book about the Chicago Cubs. No doubt this was meant as an homage […]

This social Web site allows you to read digitized versions of magazines such as Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News, among several non- baseball titles. You can post comments, send a particular article via e-mail, and other odds and ends. Wonder how long this will last. I remember another site a couple of years ago […]

* TSN Today launches

July 23, 2008

A nice addition to the virtual/digital sports publishing world. Similar in format to the virtual edition of ESPN The Magazine. You can sign up for a daily e-newsletter, too. Today’s baseball stories include items on Jorge Posada’s shoulder injury, AL and NL roundups and box scores, and a Q&A with Rays’ pitcher Scott Kazmir

TSN used to be called “the Bible of baseball.” As a youth used to spend my 50 cents of allowance for the tabloid paper which contained storied, capsule recaps and box scores, and tons of stats in a pre-Bill James era. There have been several major shifts over the years. For one thing, the decision […]

for FREE at the Sporting News‘ website. Will this staple of statistics fans for generations be available next year? That’s a good question, since American City Business Journals — Street and Smith’s parent company — took over “The Bible of baseball” recently. Stay tuned.

American City Business Journals has completed its acquisition of The Sporting News and moved its operations to Charlotte, NC. ACBJ also owns the Street & Smith Sports Group. TSN has been on a decline over the last several years. They recently made the decision to halt print publication of its annual baseball record book and […]

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: TSN‘s annual has pretty much the same team information — rosters, schedules, transactions, farm reports, impact rookies, and projected lineups — as every other magazine, as well as regional covers. A personal favorite feature is the statistical targets: Omar Vizquel is closest to 3,000 hits among active […]
