The Bookshelf Conversations: John Shea

July 1, 2020

According to Bert Sugar’s Rain Delays, one of Willie Mays‘ literary collaborators had an ignominious interaction with his subject.

“[A]t the end of the 1965 season, when [Charles] Einstein gave his subject a follow up call, after having taken notes with Mays throughout the season and after having identified himself over the phone, Mays said ‘Charlie who?’ When Einstein prompted, ‘You know, Charley Einstein, the fellow who is doing the book with you,’ Mays paused, then asked ‘What book’?”

That will definitely not happen to John Shea, the veteran sportswriter for the San Francisco Chronicle who worked with the Hall of Famer on his latest — and perhaps greatest — book. The two worked together for many years putting this one together, something that Mays hopes will be suitable for use for younger generations as well as older fans.

Shea and Mays, who turned 89 this year, put out a fine product, a throwback to the kinder, gentler sports autobiographers prior to Ball Four (here’s my review of 24 on Bookreporter.com).

So without further ado…
