Mickey and Roger? Yes.

Derek and A-Rod. No.

Lou and the Babe? Somewhere in-between.

Image result for gehrig and the babe bookTeammates don’t have to be friends and you can understand how they might not be, especially if they’re both superstars. Tony Castro takes up this topic in his newest book, Gehrig and The Babe: The Friendship and the Feud.

The results are mixed, at least to someone who grew up reading biographies that never looked under the covers (and I don’t just mean that metaphorically). On the one hand, the book is well-researched and presents lots of heretofore unreported information. On the other hand, it certainly shatters certain long-held images of these Hall of Famers.

I asked Castro about the difficulties of bringing such stories to the reading public.
