The Bookshelf Conversations: Alan Gaff

May 20, 2020

Remember last time when I said I wasn’t going to make a whole, long intro because it was on the video and would be redundant?

Nevermind.

Lou Gehrig: The Lost Memoir: Gaff, Alan D.: 9781982132392: Amazon ...

Now I’ve removed the intro from the video, preferring not to tell you what I’m going to tell you, telling you, and telling you what I wold you.

You’re welcome.

So this time we’re talking with Alan Gaff, author of Lou Gehrig: The Lost Memoir. It’s a charming look at what sportswriting used to be like almost 100 years ago. Very little (if any) complaints about teammates. No sex, drugs, or rock n’ roll, the last of which wouldn’t come along for decades. Quite a contrast to what we’ve become used to since the publishing of Ball Four.

Memoir is one of two books regarding the Iron Horse to come out in the past year, the other being Dan Joseph’s Last Ride of the Iron Horse: How Lou Gehrig Fought ALS to Play One Final Championship Season. I wonder why there’s such a renewed interest all of a sudden, especially since there are no “anniversaries” involved which would usually serve as a reason.

Both are interesting for their individual unique approach to an aspect of Gehrig’s life that have heretofore been un- or underreported.

My review of Memoir will appear on Bookreporter.com in the near future. Stay tuned.
