The Bookshelf Conversations: Michael G. Long

March 23, 2021

I have been fortunate enough to contribute to a couple of collections: The Babe at 100, based on the symposium held at Hofstra University in 1995 to mark Ruth’s centennial birthday (“The Books on the Babe”) and The Miracle Has Landed: The Amazin’ Story of How the 19698 Mets Shocked the World (“October ’69: The Miracle at Willets Point”).

So when I received a copy of 42 Today: Jackie Robinson and His Legacy, I decided to do something a little different. Rather than just one Conversation, I thought it might be interesting to chat with several of the writers, since they cover different aspects of Robinson’s life during and after his baseball career.

Leading off this four-part experiment is Michael G. Long, who served as editor for the project. A former associate professor of Religious Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies at Elizabethtown College, his previous work on this iconic figure includes Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography: The Faith of a Boundary-Breaking Hero and Beyond Home Plate: Jackie Robinson on Life After Baseball.

It was an eye-opening discussion for me, seeing how much is involved in coordinating such an undertaking. Not unlike herding cats.

Keep on eye out over the next several days for additional Conversations with Jonathan Eig, Chris Lamb, and George Vecsey, who all contributed essays to 42 Today to make it an indispensable reference.
