Commentary: TV or not TV?

March 25, 2026

Like many things for people of my age, things used to be easier (though not necessarily better), when I was a kid.

Is it just me, or is it getting harder and harder to find out were to watch your team’s games?

Used to be you could only see them on your local broadcast channels. For me it was WPIX/Channel 11 for the Yankees and WOR/Channel 9 for the Mets. Then most of the games migrated to cable, YES and SNY, respectively. Of course you also had the “Game of the Week” for nation-wide coverage; that moved around from one network to another. And now there’s the MLB Network, also a cable entity that may or may not be included in whatever TV service you have.

But increasingly, the only places to watch are on streaming platforms. For example, the Giants host the Yankees for their season opener  tonight on Netflix while the Mets welcome the Pirates on Peacock tomorrow. Then there will be games available on Apple and Amazon. Not sure if you can find any on Disney, Hulu, or Paramount, but you get the idea.

Fortunately for me, I get all those streamers, but as you cans imagine it can get a bit pricey. I don’t follow the business end of baseball enough to know how much TV money teams are getting, but you know it has to be super-substantial to afford all those salaries.

UNfortunately for me, my current work schedule — which begins at 4 a.m. — doesn’t really allow me to stay up for night games. And since what passes for The New York Times‘ sports section these days doesn’t carry game stories, I’m forced to rely on the MLB app to keep up to date.

Oh, to be young again.
