The CASEY Award hits the “big 4-oh” Anniversary in 2022.
“It seems only appropriate that we should wind up with such an outstanding field of contenders for the CASEY in this milestone year,” said Spitball Editor-in-Chief Mike Shannon. “I think the CASEYs demonstrated long ago that no other sport produces great literature, year in and year out, the way baseball does, and this lineup of excellent books proves the point yet again.”
The lineup of this year’s nominees:
The Book of Joe: Trying Not to Suck at Baseball and Life, by Joe Maddon and Tom Verducci
Charlie Murphy: The Iconoclastic Showman Behind the Chicago Cubs, by Jason Cannon
The Church of Baseball: The Making of Bull Durham: Home Runs, Bad Calls, Crazy Fights, Big Swings, and a Hit, by Ron Shelton
The Grandest Stage: A History of the World Series, by Tyler Kepner
The Lineup: Ten Books that Changed Baseball, by Paul Aron
Playing through the Pain: Ken Caminiti and the Steroids Confession that Changed Baseball Forever, by Dan Good
Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend, by Judith R. Hiltner and James R. Walker
Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original, by Howard Bryant
In Scoring Position: 40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair, by Bob Ryan & Bill Chuck
True: The Four Seasons of Jackie Robinson, by Kostya Kennedy
Kennedy won the CASEY twice, in 2011 for 56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports and again in 2014 for Pete Rose: An American Dilemma. Bryant is also a two-time recipient: Shut Out: A Story of Race and Baseball in Boston in 2002 and The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron in 2010.
FYI, here are “Bookshelf Conversations” with Shelton, Aron, Chuck, and Kennedy.
