In a 12-month period that has seen the passing of numerous Hall of Famers, it’s nice to be able to wish a happy 90th birthday to Willie Mays. James Hirsch, who wrote Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend, the most recent bio of the “greatest living player,” contributed this essay to The New York Times, which includes a full-page illustration by Graig Kreindler, one of our favorite baseball artists.
Kreindler also posted this on Twitter:
In honor of the occasion, I make this offer: Submit a review of any book about Mays (except those written for younger readers). If I use it — minimum of 250 words and subject to potential light editing — you get an audiobook of 24: Life Stories and Lessons from the Say Hey Kid, written with John Shea. I’ll post the first usable review of any one title. You can find a few suggestions here.
