Lost among the Seavers, Gibsons, and Brocks, all of whom recently passed away, Ron Perranowski has been overlooked.
The left-handed reliever enjoyed a 13-year career, mostly with the Dodgers and Twins. The New Jersey native passed away October 2 at the age of 84.
Perranoski led the National League in winning percentage in 1963 when he went 16-3. Add in the 21 saves he earned and he was responsible more than a third of his team’s 99 wins, giving them the pennant. He appeared in one game of the Dodgers’ four-game sweep of the Yankees for the World Championship.
Traded to the Twins after the 1967 season, he twice led the AL in saves (1968, 1969). he also spent some time with the Tigers and Angels at the end of his career.
Here’s the obituary in The New York Times by Rich Goldstein, the Los Angeles Times by Jack Harris, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
