PSA for the PBBC, October 22, 2020

October 22, 2020

Headnote: One of the thing I like about the Pandemic Baseball Book Club is that it’s a kind of “one stop shopping.” Instead of posting about various authors, projects, and events, all I’m doing here is cutting and pasting their newsletter. This one was received on September 16. Enjoy.

I am posting this after one of their events has already taken place, so I’m omitting.

By the way, here are Bookshelf Conversations I’ve had with some of the authors associated with the PBBC:

NEW AT THE SITE
On the Pod: It’s World Series time, and we’re jumping in with both feet.

Start with a special Fall Classic Memories episode from producer Adam MacKinnon, who has collected favorite World Series memories from PBBC authors.

Also, given their literary connection to the Dodgers, authors Jason Turbow (They Bled Blue) and Eric Nusbaum (Stealing Home) are producing seven seven-minute (more or less) episodes looking back at interesting Dodgers World Series appearances of the past. They start with 1920, when Brooklyn went seven games against Cleveland and still somehow lost, five games to two. As it turns out, that’s hardly the most interesting thing to happen in the Fall Classic that year.

Check back at the site for more, which will be uploaded throughout the World Series.

If you missed our epic SABR 50 at 50 panel last month featuring the book’s editors — John Thorn, Leslie Heaphy, Mark Armour and fellow pandemic Bill Nowlin — we recapped the conversation. The editors discussed the 50 essays covering 50 years of SABR, how they were selected and why they are remarkable.

Some highlights:

Armour: “I’m confident we got 50 great stories. … My view of SABR’s publications history was very positive when I started this project; by the time I got to the end I was somewhat overwhelmed, and quite proud.”

Thorn: “This is a collegial organization, an organization of friends, an organization that shares insights and memories, where everybody is willing to work for somebody else. It goes both ways. I could not have attained whatever level in baseball I have had it not been for my association with SABR members.”

Heaphy: “It’s the depth and breadth of the knowledge that is present in SABR. If you have an interest in any aspect of baseball at all, you’re going to find somebody else who you can share that with, and that’s shown in this book.”

Be sure to grab yourself a copy of this incredible book.

WHAT ELSE WE’VE BEEN DOING

Jon Pessah will be appearing at the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. CST to discuss his book, YOGI. You can also hear him chatting the festival up on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. CST, with Ray Hartmann on KTRS.

For the Montreal Gazette, Danny Gallagher takes a look at the new pension plan in Quebec, and how that affects former members of the Montreal Expos, including those living in the United States.

In the midst of all of the Hall of Famer deaths over recent weeks, there was another, less famous death that moved Ralph Carhart to pen his latest for The Hall Ball.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., Books in Common NW steps up to the plate with Eric Nusbaum, sharing his book Stealing Home with fellow historian, and baseball enthusiast Rob Neyer. You can get tickets here. Eric also penned a piece for Slate, about how teams can be a substantive contributor to getting out the vote.

Mark Healey appeared on one of the PBBC’s favorite podcasts, Baseball by the Book, hosted by Justin McGuire, to discuss his book Gotham Baseball.

Brian Wright has been taking a look back at the Mets memorable 2000 season for Metsmerized Online, including this piece on their NLCS victory over the Cardinals.

For Forbes, Dan Schlossberg takes a look at the Braves 2020 season and wonders what’s next for this electric squad.

GREAT GEAR FOR GETTING AWAY

It’s never too late to support the PBBC. Be sure to stop by our bookstore and swag shop for all the merch you need to let the world know just how cultured and well-read you are. If you’ve already bought the mug, may we suggest one of our sexy t-shirts?
