Not exactly a ringing endorsement

October 13, 2020

Received my review copy of The Captain: A Memoir, by David Wright and Anthony Dicomo. Look for my critique on Bookreporter.com in the near future.

I offered my initial thoughts on the book — which was released today — in a Baseball Best-Seller entry a couple of weeks ago. Here’s what the latest (monthly) issue of Sports Illustrated had to say about it:

The former star third baseman Wright reflects on a 14-year career as the calm eye in the storm that is the Mets. Injuries kept him from putting up Hall of Fame numbers, but New York fans never felt cheated because of his integrity and effort. In Flushing, that’s saying something.

First of all, that’s kind of insulting to all the hard-working people of that Queens neighborhood. But it doesn’t make me want to go out and get a copy like the pre-release buzz of Alex Rodriguez’s disappointing memoir did a few years ago.

I’m hoping to have my mind changed once I read it, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Just sayin’.
