Lest we forget: Joe Morgan

October 13, 2020

Remember the other day when I asked when does this end? And then again a few days later?

Might has well make a template.

Joe Morgan - Lawyers, Guns & MoneyThe latest Hall of Famer to pass was Joe Morgan, the feisty second baseman, mostly with the Cincinnati Reds — with whom he had his best years– and the Houston Astros. He was 77.

Among his bona fides: 10 time All-Star, two-time MVP, two-time MLB Player of the Year, five Gold Gloves, and a Silver Slugger. When he retired at the age of 40, he moved seamlessly into the broadcast both for ESPN. Like a number of ex-players who turned to covering the game, Morgan was pretty blunt in is complaints about the game. From AwfulAnnoucning.com:

Throughout his career, Morgan was outspoken in how the game had changed since his playing days with home runs and walks taking priority over putting the ball in play and stealing bases. Most notably, he was a critic of the increased role of advanced metrics and data being used in baseball — determining lineups, pitching changes, and strategic decisions — popularized by Bill James and Michael Lewis’s 2003 book Moneyball.

Here’s the obit from the Cincinnati Enquirer and Houston Chronicle. Bruce Weber had the assignment of composing the story for The New York Times.

Morgan published a few of books, including Baseball for Dummies, which was revised several times, and Joe Morgan: A Life in Baseball (with David Falkner) (1980), as well as an “instructional”: Baseball My Way (1976). He was also the subject of an early version of an audio book, Joe Morgan – Baseball’s Mr. OffenseAnd needless to say, Morgan is a staple of anything about the famous Big Red Machine.
