Major League franchises: Not just for the big boys anymore

July 25, 2012 · 4 comments

Former MLB pitcher Dave Baldwin, author of the memoir Snake Jazz, and SABR member Eric Sallee have a new venture: they are part of a group seeking to bring a Major League franchise to their small town of Yachats, OR (population:  688)

Baldwin has created a new web presence to chronicle the efforts:

Welcome to the official Rubbery Shrubbery (RS) blog, which describes the efforts of Yachats (YAH-hots), Oregon, and its citizens—called Yachatians (yah-HAY-shuns), or in some cases, Yahotties (yah-HOT-tees)—to acquire a Major League Baseball franchise and stand as a beacon of hope for people-deficient cities everywhere. To learn about Yachats, please go to this page or go to GoYachats.

According to the first blog entry, “Each post of this blog will inch you closer to the full story of the Yachatian baseball enterprise.”

I can just see the feature film now, reminiscent of the hockey film, Mystery, Alaska, starring Russel Crowe and Burt Reynolds.

Here’s wishing them well. I guess if they ever do get the franchise, it means employment for everyone in town.

Thanks, Ron. We have big plans for the Yachats Smelt. We will be needing a General Manager, and I think you would be ideal for the job. Are you interested?

You honor me, sir. Flattered to be considered. Would it require relocation? 😉

Only to Yachats. You’d love it here.

Sounds lovely, like the village in The Shipping News.
