Time well spent: A visit to the Yogi Berra Museum

December 14, 2011

Spent a few pleasant hours at the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls last Saturday. Ostensibly it was for a book sale. Turns out, mine were the only ones for sale that day.

It was nice catching up with Dave “No Relation” Kaplan, executive director of the Museum and co-author of several Berra books and to meet Rich Puerzer, a professor at Hofstra University, who is putting together a three-day seminar in April to mark the Mets’ 50th Anniversary.

There wasn’t much in the way of traffic — a few people did purchase some titles while I was there (the sale continued the next day) — so Dave was kind enough to give me a private tour of the newly-expanded Museum, along with backstory of how they acquired certain pieces that are on display. My favorite part was the video contain several of Berra’s TV appearances, including

(Dave pointed out a young Jason Alexander standing behind Berra’s left shoulder.)

Berra made a few other TV and movie appearances:

The Phil Silvers Show features several Yankees in a story about a Southern phenom played by Dick Van Dyke.

That Touch of Mink, with Doris Day and Cary Grant (Why were “civilians” allowed in the dugout during  game? Was that ever explained in the movie?)

Berra shared the spotlight with Whitey Ford voicing the cat part in the second comemrcial that comes in about the 1:05 mark. The cigarette ad was not included in the YBM montage.
