Update: Lest we forget — George Steinbrenner

As could be expected here in the tri-state area, George Steinbrenner‘s death received front-page attention in all the print media.

The New York Times ran this obituary by Richard Goldstein, which continued as a full page after the jump. In addition, there were stories by Tyler Kepner; Harvey Araton;

Steinbrenner was more than a baseball figure. He was also a New York icon as well as an important business mogul, and stories reflect that as well, as in this piece by the Times‘ Jim Dwyer and this editorial and these opinion pieces by David Brooks and Gail Collins, Maureen Dowd, and former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent. Most on-line sources offer slide shows on the late Yankee owner. Here’s how the Times did theirs.

The bottom line on the “Evil Emperor” seems to be, he was a tough guy and we didn’t like him much, but he did what he thought was best for his team and, ultimately, the game.

Front page coverage aside, I would have expected the Cleveland Plain Dealer to do a bit more, since that’s where Steinbrenner grew up. But the paper basically linked to the NY Times obit, along with these pieces by Bob Dolgan (and one of Steinbrenner’s last interviews, also with Dolgan) and Terry Pluto.
