Because an iPad (if you could snag one) could fit on your book shelf

Better leave it there, because you can’t take it to Yankee Stadium.

According to the team’s posted security measures:

“The following items are prohibited:

  • Any soft-sided bag larger than 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches, including diaper bags, backpacks and purses
  • Briefcases, coolers and hard-sided bags and containers
  • Glass, cans and plastic bottles
  • Laser pens
  • Video cameras
  • Laptop computers
  • Firearms or knives [Editor’s note: !!!]
  • Beach balls, blow horns and all other distracting noisemakers
  • Any other devices that may interfere with and/or distract any sports participant, other patron, audio or audio/visual telecast or recording of the game or any technology-related service provided in Yankee Stadium”

Of course, some of these make sense. Some, however seem ridiculous. If I’m coming to the game straight from work via public transportation, what am I supposed to do with my briefcase? If you bring your toddlers to the game, what, you’re supposed to let them soil themselves because they won’t let you bring in a diaper bag? Do they not want you to bring in drinks because you might throw the bottle or can in a fit of anger? Is it it because they want to sell more $6 sodas and $10 beers? What’s the problem with laptops? do they think the user is going to hack into the Yankees’ top secret scouting reports? And what’s what’s the deal with video cameras? (Unposted is the rule against digital SLR cameras; I guess the MLB media organ wants a monopoly on all images, too.)

Here’s a though: ban cell phones. That way the television audience doesn’t have to be subject to all those nitwits sitting behind home plate calling their friends to say, “Look at me! I’m on TV!” Seriously, I feel those devices fall into the last category of banned items, as in “Any other devices that may interfere with and/or distract any … other patron….”

I recognize the need to provide a secure environment for the fans, but come on and get real.
