* Bits and Pieces

February 4, 2010

  • Baseball GB posted this review of Joe Posnanski’s book The Machine.
  • USA Today‘s “Game On” blog ran this Q&A/profile on James S. Hirsch, author of the much-anticipated bio of Willie Mays.
  • More on the film project that won’t die: Michael Lewis’ Moneyball. And a mini-review from a New Zealander on the book.
  • Former Yankees Jim Coates has published his memoirs: Always a Yankee. You can read an excerpt here. I can never make up my mind if I should celebrate the books from old journeymen players like Coates, or feel sorry for them for clinging on to their brief fame as pro athletes years down the line. For the flip side of this, I recommend Harvard Beats Yale 29-29, even though it’s not a baseball book (slippery slope, here). These former college players still have fond memories of those days, but have mostly gone on to bigger and better things.
  • Is Amazon’s decision to remove some books from its virtual shelves a case of baseball censorship? Corporate revenge? Read here and decide.
