* Calling all swingers

March 18, 2010

Ha! I knew that would get your attention. Get our mind out of the gutter and onto the green. Golf Magazine pairs up with baseball for its current issue. Among the specific topics: The Power of Angle: The Power Angle, equally valuable in golf and baseball, is the key to a powerful and efficient swing. […]

I don’t know what else there is to say about McGwire. Some, like Joe Posnanski (twice) and my literary hero, Tony Kornheiser, are more forgiving. Mr. Tony spoke about the “confessions of Mark McGwire” on both Pardon the Interruption and his eponymous radio program on ESPN 980 in DC. Others, like Ken Rosenthal, are much […]

* Bits and pieces

December 24, 2009

Mike Silva of NY Baseball Digest recently posted this 2007 audio interview he did with former major leaguer Terry Leach. Leach, a side-arming reliever who pitched for several teams, including the Mets, wrote about his experiences in Things Happen for a Reason: The True Story of an Itinerant Life in Baseball. Long-time baseball analyst Peter Gammons, […]

Just ask Lenny Dykstra, according to this article from Folio, an industry publication. Many of Dykstra’s financial woes stem from the failed launch of the Player’s Club, a monthly magazine for professional athletes he published in partnership with Doubledown Media—a publisher of magazines aimed at the Wall Street elite—which went out of business earlier this […]

* New reference source

December 11, 2008

Google Books now includes magazines. A quick search for the phrase “baseball” returns almost 1,300 hits, including such sources as Ebony, Jet, Baseball Digest, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics (going all the way back to the early 1900s), and New York Magazine. Presumably more publications will be added. If nothing else, it’s an interesting look to […]

My daughter — my high school freshman age daughter — started receiving Hooah!, a quarterly publication produced for the National Guard. This leads to a couple of question, the first of which is how did they get her name on a mailing list. I’m 99.9% sure she didn’t request it, meaning they had to get […]

The tabloid is including the six-part magazine supplement on the House That Ruth Built in its Sunday papers. They do something like this every so often to boost sales. Nice touch. I think it’s worth the price of the edition. But remember, everything — commemorative magazines, thimbles, diner menus — is a “collectible” if you […]

The current issue of Men’s Fitness features a cover story on Red Sox’ pitcher Josh Beckett. Meanwhile the current issue of Men’s Health features Derek Jeter as it’s cover boy. (They also have a brief piece featuring Jacob Ellerbsy of the Sox). I’m not just saying this because I’m from the NY area, but Jeter […]

With apologies to Journey. Other publications have made their full runs available as either CD (New Yorker, Rolling Stone) or on-line, but this, this is an important resource. Coming Thursday to a computer near you.

American City Business Journals has completed its acquisition of The Sporting News and moved its operations to Charlotte, NC. ACBJ also owns the Street & Smith Sports Group. TSN has been on a decline over the last several years. They recently made the decision to halt print publication of its annual baseball record book and […]

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: TSN‘s annual has pretty much the same team information — rosters, schedules, transactions, farm reports, impact rookies, and projected lineups — as every other magazine, as well as regional covers. A personal favorite feature is the statistical targets: Omar Vizquel is closest to 3,000 hits among active […]

You know the season is just around the corner when the baseball annuals hit the newsstands. When I first developed an interest for the game, back in the mid 1960s, Street and Smith‘s — Likes Topps baseball cards — was the only game in town. Since then — again like Topps — other publications have […]

Analyzing the annuals

January 21, 2008

Hard to believe, but there are already sme fantasy baseball magazines on the magazine racks. Used to be Street and Smith’s was the only game in town; you knew the season was just a short time away when that became available. But time no longer matters when it comes to fantasy baseball. As soon as […]

Don’t you just love the Internet? It’s filled with all sorts of treasure. The latest nugget I’ve found is from Manybooks.net, a site for free e-books, available via download for several platforms, which include some rare baseball titles: The High School Pitcher, by H. Irving Hancock The Red Headed Outfield and Other Stories (1920) and […]
