I’ve been posting a lot of these over the years (more than 300, but, sorry to say, I missed a few along the way), but MLB.com has put together a nice list of baseball figures who passed away over the course of the year, including:
- Roger Angel
- Tommy Davis
- Jeremy Giambi
- Hector Lopez
- Gaylord Perry
- Vin Scully
- Bruce Sutter
- Ralph Terry
- Anthony Varvaro
- Gerald Williams
- Maury Wills
- John Wockenfuss
I wasn’t going to comment on the article’s headline — “Remembering Baseball Greats in 2022” — as it seemed picayune of me to wonder about the relative greatness of the deceased, but the writer open the door when he separated the above from “others of note,” including:
- Larry Biittner
- Chuck Carr
- Julio Cruz
- Gene Clines
- Terry Cooney
- Jim Corsi
- Ike Delock
- Dick Ellsworth
- Bill Haller
- Joel Horlen
- Odalis Perez
- Dick Schofield
- Dwight Smith
- John Stearns
- Lee Thomas
- Pete Ward
- David West
- Dave Wickersham
What’s even more disturbing to me is that many of these are players I grew up with, whose baseball cards I collected in the 60s and 70s. At the time, they were only in their twenties or thirties and as a kid, you don’t think that your heroes will ever die.
Most of these obits come from RIPBaseball.com, a very interesting site with the tagline, “Possibly Morbid, Hopefully Interesting.” They posted their own “In Memoriam” for the year. You can read Part One here.
