* Announcement: The next big thing for The Sporting News

June 11, 2008

TSN used to be called “the Bible of baseball.” As a youth used to spend my 50 cents of allowance for the tabloid paper which contained storied, capsule recaps and box scores, and tons of stats in a pre-Bill James era.

There have been several major shifts over the years. For one thing, the decision not to print book versions of their famous Baseball Guide; they’re available free on-line now. Then there’s the glossy format, with less of a concentration on baseball and much more for other sports.

The latest news:

On September 1, 2008 Sporting News Magazine will shift from a weekly to a bi-weekly publishing cycle. The magazine will also become 25% larger and printed on superior paper stock, increasing the publication’s resolution, graphics and aesthetic value for both readers and advertisers. Although the magazine will continue to cater to avid sports enthusiasts, shifts in sports media consumption to the internet and digitally based products have diminished the importance of newsweekly magazines.

“Extensive marketing research told us that today’s fans still value the depth and insight that a magazine can deliver, which they believe is complementary to their internet experience,” said Ed Baker, Publisher, Sporting News. “Avid enthusiasts are looking for access to and expert opinion from today’s most knowledgeable sports insiders.” In response, the Company has secured the services of a broad range of writers and contributors from the world of sports, including team owners, coaches, athletes and award-winning storytellers, such as John Feinstein and Roger Kahn.

Newly hired Editor-in-Chief, Jeff D’Alessio, will craft the editorial vision for both Sporting News Magazine and Sporting News Today. “The changes we’re making, including adding a host of well-known writers and contributors, will undoubtedly provide sports fans with the insider knowledge they covet, while providing our company with a clear point-of-differentiation versus other sports media organizations,” said Mr. D’Alessio.

The publishers, who also put out the Street & Smith brand, are also launching

Sporting News Today, the world’s first daily digital sports newspaper. Sporting News Today, the newspaper for the modern day, will be delivered free to a registered user’s electronic mailbox each morning, 365 days a year, 7 days a week [and] will provide coast-to-coast sports coverage from a newsroom of over 200 sport reporters and contributors, making it the largest sports newsroom in the country.

The new on-line presence is slated to begin July 23.

I hate the new magazine. It was not what I paid for. I would rather read that online, and still receive the old version. The Sporting News made a mistake in their approach.
