New York Yankees

It’s quite a leap from romance novels to baseball non-fiction, but Jane Heller has traversed the expanse surprisingly well. Heller, author of 13 books including Infernal Affairs and An Ex to Grind, has parlayed her life-long love for the Bronx Bombers into Confessions of a She-Fan: The Course of True Love with the New York […]

by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci Doubleday The former manager of the New York Yankees — and one of its most successful — teams up with Sports Illustrated’s senior baseball writer for this unique and somewhat baffling presentation. Although Joe Torre gets top billing as the nominative author, the reader will get the impression that […]

In trying to protect themselves against future “attacks” with their ” non-disparagement clause,” the Yankees have instead made themselves a laughing stock at best and a source of outrage at worst. Look for the ACLU to get involved at any moment. And PETA; they’re always looking for some publicity. Among the numerous commentaries on the […]

In light of Joe Torre’s new book, the Yankees are considering a non-disparagement clause in their employee contracts. According to a Newsday article by Wallace Mathews, “The Yankees are said to feel betrayed by Torre’s book, which has been interpreted as critical of some players, most notably Alex Rodriguez, and inaccurate in its recounting of […]

Well said, sir. In another piece about the Torre book, Jay Price of the Staten Island Advance notes what a long, slow off-season it’s been for the sports desks: Most of the revelations turned out to be as shocking as finding out Rush Limbaugh’s not planning any sleepovers at the Obama White House. What’s that […]

* Torre: The saga continues

January 28, 2009

A feeling of discomfort brought on by the use of  the word “betrayal” by many sports pundits has Joe Torre on the defensive. In this piece from yesterday’s NYTimes.com, the former Yankee manager seeks to right the wrong impressions that the publisher’s marketing department probably looooves.  You can practically see them rubbing their hands with […]

Let’s get this straight: I can’t stand Howard Stern, I find him a vulgar person. It’s my wife who enjoys him and his minions. So for Hanukka, I gave her a copy of Artie Lange’s new book Too Fat To Fish. I mention this only because he has an extensive section about how he and […]

* Oh, come on already…

December 23, 2008

The Yankees just signed Teixiera. Enough is enough. Getting on my soapbox again, I think that just as international teams are only allowed to have a certain amount of foreign-born players, so should the Majors only be allowed a certain amount of free agents; everyone else has to be “home grown.”

* Review: The Postwar Yankees

December 23, 2008

From one of my “competitors,” the GreatBaseballBooks blog, this brief item on David Surdam’s The Postwar Yankees: Baseball’s Golden Age Revisited. Upshot: Surdam’s writing is straightford [sic] but not boring. If you need to read something by an economist, you could do much worse.

From the blog: Wrigley Field And from the book by the same name: The Boston Red Sox Though many would argue that the Chicago Cubs are the top club for white people, the Boston Red Sox remain the undisputed white franchise. In fact, were it not for the players, there would be no recorded instances […]

Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats, And toss my coffin in Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall Will bid the bleacher bums adieu And I will […]
