Alex Rodriguez

* It is to weep

February 10, 2009

Yeah, I think it’s depressing news on top of what’s been a flurry of depressing items, when it comes to Major League Baseball. And if you’re a fan of Major League Baseball, I think it — it tarnishes an entire era, to some degree. And it’s unfortunate, because I think there are a lot of […]

* Fessing up

February 9, 2009

According to an AP story by Ronald Blum, Alex Rodriguez has admitted taking banned substances in 2003 and is very sorry. At least it was quick. You know it’s a big deal when the Huffington Post takes notice of a sports story, both in seriousness and in jest.

So what do you think: will the reports of A-Rod on steroids help the sale of Joe Torre’s book? Not that it needs much in the way of a push, according to this piece in the New York Daily News. A suspicious person would wonder about the timing of the announcement. After all, it’s been […]

Or, “here’s another fine mess.” On a recent episode of PTI, Kornheiser and Wilbon were talking about the latest Barry Bonds situation (i.e., a judge saying evidence against him might be disallowed because of improper procedure) and wondering what that might mean for the slugger’s Hall of Fame chances. Of all of his contemporaries — […]

* Torre: The saga continues

January 28, 2009

A feeling of discomfort brought on by the use of  the word “betrayal” by many sports pundits has Joe Torre on the defensive. In this piece from yesterday’s NYTimes.com, the former Yankee manager seeks to right the wrong impressions that the publisher’s marketing department probably looooves.  You can practically see them rubbing their hands with […]

* Torre update

January 27, 2009

Now begins the backpedaling. Torre and Cashman are still pals, says this article by Jack Curry in today’s NY Times. And Richard Sandomir contributes this thoughtful column on the style the author’s used (third person): “a hybrid in the sphere of celebrity autobiographies, in which a star hires a writer to render his or her […]

* A-Rod and Madonna? Oy.

August 5, 2008

The perils of being a sports superstar in New York (or Los Angeles, I imagine), is that there are always gossip-inistas waiting to catch you doing something, whether it’s being out a bit too late (for a single person) and possibly playing some hanky-panky (kids, ask your parents) with another celeb. This one, from New […]

What’s the difference between A-Rod and the Bambino? The way they have been treated by the media. In Ruth’s day, what happened behind bedroom doors (usually) stayed behind bedroom doors. That is not longer the case. Photographers and reporters hang around, just waiting for the opportunity to take an embarrassing picture. But according to this […]

Hot on the release of the Mitchell Report, 60 Minutes aired a segment on Alex Rodriguez, the former and future highest paid player in the game. Among other revelations, the 2007 AL MVP says he has never taken performance enhancing drugs. Of course, everyone is pretty much skeptical of anything any athlete has to say […]

Richard Ben Cramer, author of Joe DiMaggio: The Hero’s Life, is working on a biography of American League MVP Alex Rodriguez. Last month, he told Publishers Weekly he expected A-Rod, who had declared free agency, to re-sign with his old team. So basically there were only two options: Either he would or he wouldn’t. Cramer […]
