* Bits and Pieces

August 28, 2009

Trying to catch up, once again: * A review of Satchel and an interview with author Larry Tye, from BeyondtheBoxScore.com. And an excerpt from Sportfeelgoodstories.com. * From his mouth to God’s ears (as my people say). From Foxbusiness.com, word that — according to the author of a book on Bernie Madoff: “Fred Wilpon, the owner […]

New MLB 09 commercials discovered! The original: On the other hand, don’t give up your day job just yet. I guess it’s a matter of motivation. (Does that Sullivan guy remind anyone else of Grandpa from The Munsters? Use your imagination; picture him with slicked-back hair and a cape.) What do you think, Sullivan’s granddaughter? […]

Bobby Feller’s generation complained about the high salaries of the players that came after them. Now Wade Boggs speaks for the players from his era on the steroiders and their possible entry into the Hall of Fame. Can chicken be considered a performance enhancing food? Come to think of it what about that? Why are […]

*A blast from the past

June 12, 2009

Another piece of trivia: Phil Rizzuot was a guest on the premier of the popular TV game show, What’s My Line? (Feb. 2, 1950). I was tickled by the formality between the host and the panelists. Compare that with today’s beauts like Deal or No Deal.

I never understood why some radio sports talk shows feel the need to televise their programs. Basically you’re just looking at the host talking, or the guest, if there is one in the studio, sitting there on a static shot. Wow. In this case, Mike and Mike in the Morning interview Roger Clemens on the […]

I feel guilty enough about doing this, let lone playing video games. But I’m sorely tempted by MLB 09 The Show. The NY Times gave it a very positve vibe in today’s paper. There’s also a trailer. But you have to love the commercial with Tim Lincecum and his doppelganger for Major League Baseball 2k9 […]

PBS recently announced that it will air The Tenth Inning, the new Ken Burns documentary on baseball, in the spring of 2010. The special will coincide with a re-broadcast of the original nine-part documentary, which debuted in 1994 and was seen by more than 48 million viewers. The Tenth Inning follows baseball’s trajectory from 1993 […]

* Now it's official

February 1, 2009

Joe Torre has hit the book tour trail. His first appearance: Larry King Live. (Will someone please remove the hanger from Larry’s shirt?) SportingNews.com provides a transcript of the segment. King, a big baseball fan, came out with a book of his own, titled, simple enough, Why I Love Baseball. Here’s an audio sample, read […]

(With apologies to Cole Porter.) Recently discovered this very well-produced and hilarious webisode series about the Topps baseball card company. Rather than go into great detail, I’ll let you discover it via BackonTopps.com. It’s a cross between Dallas and Curb Your Enthusiasm. You can also download the series through iTunes.

* More MLB Network news

December 31, 2008

MLB Network will be hungry for content until the season opens. One wonders why they didn’t wait until at least Spring Training — if not opening day — to launch. I guess they wanted to start building their audience early. I watched a little but last night, mostly previews of what is to come. Among […]

If Neil Leifer’s new football book is out of your league, consider Gandhi at the Bat. The short “mockumentary” by Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm, based on an original short story by Chet Williamson, won the Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at the Baseball Hall of Fame Film Festival in September for excellence “in direction, […]

Interesting mini-doc with a couple of gentlemen opining about the use of sabrmetrics in constructing and strategizing (sp?) professional baseball.
