Review: Mets by the Numbers

February 25, 2008

As an unabashed Mets fan I’ll read anything about the team. Of course, this non-discriminatory policy can lead to some time-wasting clunkers. On the other hand, there are some time-wasters that can be lots of fun (you’re reading this, after all).  Mets by the Numbers: A Complete Team History of the Amazin’ Mets by Uniform […]

This library Web site suggests that stat-heads have a long and proud history in Spalding’s Baseball Guide and Official League Book for 1895 which is available on-line thanks to the Guttenberg Project via Internet Archive.

…but no one does anything about it. But Yankfan vs. Soxfan has a good idea on how to denote the statistics of questionable players. * # & ? (etc.)

Charges of “ism” — racism, sexism, agism, etc. — always make for hot topics and the media loves to jump on any information, sometimes a bit too quickly, or without fully understanding the material/source/etc. Case in point: In the Aug. 13 edition of Time magazine, Katie Rooney asks the button-pushing question “Are Baseball Umpires Racist?” […]

Not that he’s been out of the media eye lately, but Barry Bonds’ recent achievement has given new life not only to books about him, but to the writing profession as a whole. You have the philosophical/scientific communities arguing about the ethical issues and whether or not performance enhancing drugs can actually help a batter […]

Barry Bonds and Philosophy

August 13, 2007

I’ve long been interested in philosophy. Or rather the concept of philosophy, with all its thoughtfulness and intellectual pursuits. So I wondered what that community had to say about Bonds’ potentially questionable methods en route to 756. Herewith a sample: From Uselesstree: The un-Way of Barry Bonds When we try too hard to reach a […]

In a previous post, I wrote that The Sporting News would no longer be printing it’s annual baseball record book. True to their word, however, they have made it available on-line at no charge. The sections, rendered as PDF files, are divided into an Introduction and user’s guide; regular season (yearly leaders, career milestones, general […]

The New Ballgame

February 22, 2007

The New Ballgame: Understanding Baseball Statistics for the Casual Fan, by Glenn Guzzo (ACTA Sports). A brief review of a brief book. Guzzo does a nice job explaining the key stats to newcomers to the game who want to enhance their experience by adding that numerical component, rather than “just watching.” He also offers an […]

The Sporting News and its parent company, American City Business Journals, have decided to suspend publication of the Baseball Guide and the Complete Baseball Record and Fact Book. There will be no 2007 edition of the Guide, and the 2007 edition of the Record and Fact Book will not appear in print. These decisions were […]

Keeping track

November 27, 2006

I’ve been meaning to make a list of my baseball library for some time, but found the prospect too daunting. Util recently. Thanks to Librarything.com, all one has to do is (usually) type in the ISBN number or title and all the info is provided in a nice format of the cataloguer’s choosing. So far, […]
