This site offers dozens of reviews of baseball titles written by readers like ourselves (Scroll down to “sports”; there’s a link specifically for baseball titles). Typically, the publisher’s press release tops the individual page, followed by reader reviews and ratings. Think Amazon.com without all the ordering information and clutter. Like most criticism, the reviews can […]

* "The Best," once again

July 23, 2008

I was planning to do my own analysis of Derek Gentiles recent title, Baseball’s Best 1,000: Rankings of the Skills, the Achievements, and the Performance of the Greatest Players of All Time. One thousand? seems like a mighty task Mr. Gentile has undertaken. Would you mind being the last on that list? After all, there […]

General: Yankee for Life: My 40-year Journey in Pinstripes, by Bobby Murcer. The passing of the former ballplayer puts this one on top. Yankee Stadium: The Official Retrospective, by Santasiere and Vancil. The closing of the ballpark makes this subgenre hot. But why don’t they wait until the final season is over, which would complete […]

The Bullpen section of Baseball-Reference.com (“Baseball’s collaborative encyclopedia”) published this list of 130 books (with links) that deal with baseball. Not sure of the criteria or why that specific number, but it’s there for the browsing.

* Now we're talkin'

May 1, 2008

I came across these posts from The Bronx Banter portion of The Baseball Toaster and The Hardball Times that cut to the chase of what The Bookshelf is all about. Alex Belth, who writes Bronx Banter, got the ball rolling, in response to a query he received from Phillyburbs.com regarding his suggestions for “ten essential […]
