The Vulture, a component of New York Magazine, recently published this list by Tim Griersen and Will Leitch of “The 50 Greatest Sports Movies of All Time.” Needless to say, they’re not all about baseball.
Can’t say I have any real arguments with what they came up with. I was getting ready to complain that none of the films mentioned seemed to be released prior to the 1970s, but then I was pleasantly surprised.
Counting down, we have
- No. 50 Bang the Drum Slowly
- No. 42 Eephus
- No. 41 Major League
- No 35 Eight Men Out
- No. 29 The Bad News Bears
- No. 27 Sugar
- No. 21 Moneyball
- No. 14 Field of Dreams
- No. 10 A League of Their Own
- No. 7 The Pride of the Yankees
- No. 4 Bull Durham
The links lead to the trailers for each movie.
Eephus and Sugar were dark horses here. Kind of surprised by the absence of The Natural, which always to make the top baseball lists.
Just FYI, the No. 1 sports movie was judged to be Hoop Dreams.
