One of the unsung players for the World Champion Mets in 1969, pitcher Jim McAndrew has died at the age of 80. He was just 6-7 for the Amazin’s that year (37-53 over seven seasons, the last with the Padres), but he was nevertheless a part of the rotation that included Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry, and Don Cardwell.
Whenever I see players that I watched as a young man have passed away, I am more and more aware of my own mortality. We just lost the father of one of my daughter’s life-long friends to lung cancer; he was just 58.
Other recent passings from “my” era include Ed Ott (72), U.L. Washington (70), Bill Plummer (76), and Jose DeLeon (63).
