It should come as no surprise that this year’s CASEY Award, presented by Spitball Magazine, goes to Joe Posnanski for his latest masterpiece, Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments. It almost seems unfair that such great work should come from the same writer in such quick succession.

Joe Posnanski has won the 2023 CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year for Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments. Joe received rankings of 1 – 2 – 5 for a total low score of 8 points.
This is Joe’s third CASEY Award win, putting Joe, along with the other 3-time winner Kostya Kennedy, in a very exclusive literary baseball club! Congratulations to Joe, who will be here in March to accept his beautiful Louisville Slugger CASEY Award baseball bat.
The 41st annual CASEY Awards will take place on Sunday, March 24, at Poor Michael’s Sports & Karaoke Bar in Springfield Township at 11938 Hamilton Avenue. The door opens at 1:30 and the program begins at 2:00.
At this time, two other authors of outstanding baseball books, both Finalists for the 2023 CASEY, plan to attend the event: Jim Chapman and Steve Gietschier. Jim is the author of a huge and beautiful baseball book called Baseball Photography of the Deadball Era, and Steve authored a seminal, sweeping history called Baseball: The Turbulent Midcentury Years. Both Jim and Steve will have copies of their books on hand for sale and signing.
