Say it ain’t so, SI

It was bad enough when Sports Illustrated laid off many of the staff that made the magazine “illustrated” to begin with.

I was bad enough when it went from a weekly to a bi-weekly to a monthly to just online.

But now?

Sports Illustrated lays off most of its staff, threatening iconic brand’s future

I guess the younger generation is so connected to their phones and other devices that they don’t need the physical versions. Too much to carry around. Too inconvenient.

I guess, to look at the plus side, it saves trees.

From a story on CNN:

In December, the Arena Group fired Sports Illustrated’s CEO Ross Levinsohn after an embarrassing debacle in which Sports Illustrated was caught publishing stories with fake author names and profile photos generated by artificial intelligence. Levinsohn was replaced, effective immediately, by interim chief executive Manoj Bhargava, the 5-Hour Energy founder who owns a majority stake in The Arena Group, said Vince Bodiford, a spokesperson for Bhargava.

How stupid do you have to be to try to pull that off. No wonder so many in the creative fields are worried about their jobs.

FYI, I saw the first edition of SI on eBay for $6,890.

I must admit, I didn’t read it regularly. I had a subscription on and off and always tried to get the Baseball Preview issue. Still, it’s sad to come to the end of an institution like that.
