♦   The Baseball Hall of Fame will hold a screening of Fielding Dreams: A Celebration of Baseball Scouts on Thursday, Jan. 18. “[T]his new documentary goes beyond moneyball [sic] and features dozens of interviews with some of the scouting legends of the game, including 5 scouts who helped build the 2023 World Series Champion Texas Rangers. Narrated by former MLB pitcher Jerry Blevins.”

There will be a Q&A session Following the screening.

For more on the topic, I recommend Baseball’s Endangered Species: Inside the Craft of Scouting by Those Who Lived It, by Lee Lowenfish.

♦   I’m a big believer in the theory of “Chekhov’s Gun” so even though this film doesn’t really have anything to do with baseball, I’m including it because, as per the title, it offers “Why the Baseball Bat in Signs Is Sci-Fi’s Greatest Chekhov’s Gun.”

♦   Not a horror movie enthusiast but after hearing about Night Swim on the Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast, I figured it was okay for the Bookshelf because there is a baseball connection. Here’s the synopsis:

Forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, former baseball player Ray Waller moves into a new house with his wife and two children. He hopes that the backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for himself. However, a dark secret from the home’s past soon unleashes a malevolent force that drags the family into the depths of inescapable terror.

You wouldn’t know any of that from the trailer, but here it is anyway.

♦   Our favorite baseball artist, Graig Kreindler, was a guest on the Amusing Jews podcast to discuss “Painting America’s Pastime.”
