As New Year’s rolls around, one of things you can still count on these days are those “end of the year” recaps. You know, “The Top 10 in…” or “The Best of…” fill-in-the-blank.
However, after going through numerous such lists, I was dismayed at how few sports titles, let alone baseball, were included, given the importance of sports in society. (It also occurs to me that I don’t read enough outside of baseball, especially fiction. So much for being well-rounded.)
These all qualify for the Bookshelf because — and I know it’s a stretch — you can print out the articles and put them there. So without further ado:
- Joe Posnanski’s Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments made several such lists of best books of the year including Uproxx.com and the California Review of Books. And while it didn’t make any of the year-end lists from The New York Times, I felt compelled to include this “Inside the Best-Seller List” piece from Sept. 21. Here’s the Bookshelf Conversation we had following his latest release.
- Winning Fixes Everything, by Evan Drellich made NPR’s list.
- In a blast from the past, Eric Rolfe Greenberg’s The Celebrant — originally published more than 20 years ago — made Defector.com’s list of “The Best Things We Read In 2023.”
- Then there are these things:
- The wackiest, wildest games of the year from MLB.com
- MLB’s weirdest injuries of 2023, from a pool basketball mishap to a toilet setback from The Athletic (not sure if you’ll be able to read the pieces from TA since they’re behind a paywall. Maybe they’ll be a bit generous in the spirit of the season)
- MLB’s 20 most mind-blowing hitting, pitching feats of 2023
- MLB’s Weirdest & Wildest teams and games of 2023
