Lest We Forget: Andre Braugher

December 13, 2023

I was shocked to hear the news this morning that Andre Braugher has passed away.

Braugher, 61, made his TV debut on Kojak but really received attention as Det. Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Streets (created by David Simon, a Baltimore Orioles fan). He appeared in numerous movies and other TV shows, most notably as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

His baseball connection: Braugher portrayed the title character in The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson, a 1990 TV movie.

Warning: strong racist language in the clip.

On a personal note: I happened to run into Braugher at a sporting goods store in while I was working at the New Jersey Jewish News. He was with his teenage son and I debated for quite a while as to whether I should say something. I did, telling him how much I admired his work on HLOTS as well as in the Civil War picture Glory (this was in an era before selfies). It must be awkward, being approached by a stranger having a private moment in a public place like that, but he was very gracious.

Here is his obituary from The New York Times.
