And another legend bites the dust. “Brooksie” passed away today at the age of 86. Here’s his obit from The Baltimore Sun by Mike Klingaman and The New York Times by Richard Goldstein.
There was no “Mt. Rushmore” of third basemen; Robinson was ne plus ultra. There have been other great defensemen at his position, but he was the standard by which everyone else was measured. He was the face of the Baltimore Orioles in the sixties and early-mid seventies, along with Frank Robinson and Boog Powell (sorry, but pitchers don’t count here).
Not to mention the short bill of his batting helmet, a style worn by no one else.
There were several books written by and about Robinson, including:
- Brooks: The Biography of Brooks Robinson, by Doug Bird (2015)
- Putting It All Together, by Robinson with Fred Bauer (1971)
- Third Base is My Home, by Robinson as told to Jack Tobin (1974)
- The Brooks Robinson Story, by Jack Zanger (1967)
