A League of Their Own premiered more than 30 years ago. Ahead of my Bookshelf Conversation with Erin Carlson, author of No Crying in Baseball: The Inside Story of A League of Their Own — Big Stars, Dugout Drama, and a Home Run for Hollywood, I found several stories about the film that takes a look back on the actors and anecdotes. Among them:
- “‘A League of Their Own’ Hits 30: Stars, Writer on Studio Battles, Mystery Ending and Why the Sequel Script Died“
- “‘A League of Their Own’ Cast: Where Are They Now?“
- “Geena Davis Recalls Tom Hanks Being ‘Just a Prince’ on ‘A League of Their Own’ Set“
- “Geena Davis on Keeping in Touch with ‘A League of Their Own’ Cast 30 Years Later: ‘We Remain a Team’“
- “Debra Winger Says She Quit ‘A League of Their Own’ Over Madonna Casting Because It Became ‘Elvis Film’“
- “After 30 years, is ‘A League Of Their Own’ still a home run?” (From NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour)
Sneak preview: One of the knocks on the movie was that it did not address the lesbian aspect of the league at the time. Not all that surprising given the condition of sexual politics in the early 90s. The Amazon TV show — far inferior in the baseball portrayal, IMO — takes a much stronger look, so if there’s anything to recommend it, it’s that. Look for that to be discussed in detail in the Conversation with Erin Carlson which I hope to post next week.
