China and Coral (“Moneyball” and “Bull Durham”)

June 20, 2023

Those are the “traditional names” for the 20th and 35th anniversaries.

As mentioned in the BBS post from Friday, we are celebrating two “milestones” in baseball pop culture. Moneyball gets china for marking the 20th since its publication. Doesn’t it seem like we’ve been hearing about that for a lot longer? Friday’s entry refers to an interview with author Michael Lewis in The Athletic but here’s another piece by Kevin Kernan on BallNine.com. And Rob Neyer spoke with Lewis on a recent SABRcast podcast. And since the Moneyball approach is ubiquitous in the business world, here’s “Michael Lewis on how Moneyball changed how business views data” from Growthbusiness.co.uk and “Understanding Congressional Gerrymandering: ‘It’s Moneyball Applied to Politics’” from History.nycourts.gov.

As for Bull Durham, that gets the coral. Appreciations come from The Athletic (available for free with a NY Times online subscription). And just for fun, here’s Janet Maislin’s original review of the film from June 15, 1988, as well as a Times piece on the musical (!) adaptation for the stage (hope you can access them). And more Bull from WRALSportsFan.com. (And my Bookshelf Conversation with the film’s creator, Ron Shelton.)
