The things some people might keep on a bookshelf

But they probably tried to fence them.

HT to Lisanne R. who sent me this curiously vague story from the Montclair Local about the arrest “of the individuals responsible for the 2014 robbery of priceless memorabilia from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.” The story is very sparse on details, other than the gratitude of the Museum and family.

Much more informative is a follow-up piece she sent, this one from Justice.gov: “Nine Charged With Conspiracy To Steal Major Artworks And Sports Memorabilia.”

Evidently these were quite the busy bees, breaking into “multiple museums and other institutions to steal priceless works of art, sports memorabilia, and other objects” over a period of 20 years.

Items from the YBM included “Nine (9) World Series rings, seven (7) other championship rings, and two (2) MVP plaques awarded to Yogi Berra, worth over $1,000,000 stolen in 2014….” (So if there’s a number attached to the value of the ill gotten gains, price tag, can it still be considered priceless?) Here’s a New York Post story published at the time.

Sadly, as reported in by Montclair Local, “As the investigation concludes, the museum acknowledged that the original stolen treasures will not be recovered.”
