Front Cover: The Atlantic Magazine – July/Aug 2023 | Boomers Daily♦ The Atlantic published an article on the current state of the game as the cover story of its July/August issue. Funny, the online version is titled “Moneyball Broke Baseball” while the cover seems to offer a slightly more upbeat spin with “How Baseball Saved Itself.”

♦ This is the time of year when we get summer reading suggestions. Very rarely do they will include a baseball book, like this one from Word&Way about Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original by Mitchell Nathanson.

♦ From the Windsor Star in Ontario, “Jacobs authors book on 1934 Black provincial championship ball team.” I found the photo a bit amusing and reminiscent of a scene in That Thing You Do in which Tom Hanks admonishes his client, The Wonders, for holding their new record upside down. In this case, the author obscures her own name on the cover of her newest release, 1934: The Chatham Coloured All-Stars’ Barrier-Breaking Year. Jacobs also published 100 Miles of Baseball: Fifty Games, One Summer with her husband Dale in 2021.

Joe Posnanski, author of The Baseball 100 and upcoming Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments, has this piece — “The Long, Colorful History of Baseball’s ‘Eephus’ Pitch” — on the Esquire website, which may or may not be viewable if you’re not a subscriber.

From SpectrumNews1 in Orange County, CA, “‘Making it Home‘: Teresa Strasser’s new memoir tackles grief through baseball”
