Even though I had been collecting a few cards in the mid 1960s, this is the one that stands out in my mind: Mike Shannon from the 1967 Topps set.
Shannon, who was associated with the Cardinals for almost 60 years as a player and broadcaster, passed away Saturday at the age of 83. Here’s his obituary from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
His page on Baseball-Reference includes links to further tributes. I was kind of surprised he only played for nine seasons, but those included three-pennant winners, back when only the top teams in the AL and NL made it to the World Series. Despite never being named an All-Star, he finished seventh in the 1968 MVP race.
Shannon published Get Up, Baby!: My Seven Decades With the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022.
