Lest we forget: Jane Gross

November 14, 2022

The pioneering journalist broke barriers when it came to women entering the locker room.

Gross passed away Nov. 9 at the age of 75.

Ms. Gross interviewing Dave Winfield of the Yankees in a locker room, both seated on metal folding chairs. Behind them are dressing stalls with an abundance of uniforms and other clothing on hangers and with shoes, shower sandals and other items strewn about the floor.

In the obituary from The New York Times, Richard Sandomir wrote,” In 2018, when she received an award from the Association for Women in Sports Media, Ms. Gross recalled the indignities she faced once she had entered locker rooms and clubhouses. One baseball player, Dave Kingman, poured a bucket of water on her, and she once had spaghetti and meatballs thrown at her.”

She was also one of the female sportswriters featured in the 2013 ESPN documentary,  Let Them Wear Towels.

Here’s her obituary from Sports Illustrated and Newsday, where she got her start.
