It’s a Mets world after all

October 20, 2022

The latest disappointment of the Mets losing in the Wild Card round after finishing with 101 wins during the regular season brought to mind Devin Gordon’s 2021 book So Many Ways to Lose: The Amazin’ True Story of the New York Mets―the Best Worst Team in Sports.

I was in touch with Gordon and he indicated it was too soon for a revision but I’m certain there will be at least one book next year about the 2022 season.

In the meantime I went back to my bookshelves. There are two rows of Mets titles ranging in subject from reference to biographies and memoirs to celebrations of happier times (the World Championships of 1969 and 1986). The most recent is A Year in Mudville: The Full Story of Casey Stengel and the Originals Mets, by David Bagdade, which came out as a revised edition this year. The oldest book in my collection is The Amazing Mets by Jerry Mitchell, a 50-cent paperback originally published in 1964 and revised a couple of times.

All told, there are more than 80 titles about the team crammed on the shelves.

Since I no longer feel the need to have the physical volume, and in an effort to save space and prevent the shelves (and floors) from collapsing, I’ve been searching Scribd for the past few years. It’s a marvelous source for e- and audio-book, as many as you want for a flat monthly fee. That’s where I found Cleon Jones’ 2022 release, Coming Home: My Amazin’ Life with the New York Mets.

But as much as I’m interested in winnowing down my library, my Mets books are all keepers.
