There is little that I can offer that would be as eloquent as what others have said and written about the legendary broadcaster who passed away Tuesday at the age of 94.
From what I know, Scully was a modest person and a real mensch. He declined to tell his own story and was almost embarrassed when others wanted to do so. Thank goodness for Curt Smith‘s 2009 bio, Pull Up a Chair: The Vin Scully Story.
Any real baseball fan, especially someone of a certain age will recall some of his most famous calls. Two that I actually experienced first-hand:
And of course, this one, which was much more personal since I am a lifelong Mets fan:
AwfulAnnoucning.com — which, of course cannot apply when talking about Scully — included those two among five of his most famous calls, the others being Sandy Koufax’s perfect game against the Chicago Cubs in 1965, Don Larsen’s perfecto in the 1956 World Series, and, to remind us that he did other sports besides baseball, “The Catch” in the 1982 NFC Championship Game.
Tributes are pouring in from numerous outlets. Here are just a few.
- From The New York Times, this obit by Richard Goldstein and another list of “five memorable calls” (all baseball this time) via Jonathan Ellis.
- An obit from the Los Angeles Times, an appreciation of “How Vin Scully bridged generations,” a recap of the final inning of Koufax’s perfect game, and a farewell.
- From MLB.com by Anthony Castrovince.
- From CNN, this on a recent Don Lemon Tonight. (This might not be available by the time you try.)
- From Sports Illustrated by Steve Rushin, “The Smaller Vin Scully Made Himself, the Larger He Became,” and “My Conversation with Vin Scully” by Matthew Postins.
- Scully was such a figure that he received attention from non-sports media, such as this piece in the National Review.
The Dodgers will honor Scully with a commemorative patch worn on the uniforms for the rest of the season.
