No, not Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
But the “Shot heard ’round the world,” the game that regularly brings up “The Giants win the pennant” call. The game that forever link the names Thomson and Branca a generation before Wilson and Buckner.
I was reminded of the platinum anniversary by a piece in today’s New York Times by George A. Hirsch who was there at the Polo Grounds for one of the greatest moments in the history of the national pastime. Sadly neither Branca nor Thomson (or Buckner) are still with us.
Of course, such an event demands recording in book form, so herewith is a list of relevant titles:
- The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and the Shot Heard Round the World, by Joshua Prager. Based on his Wall Street Journal article addressing some cheating involved.
- Miracle Ball: My Hunt for the Shot Heard ‘Round the World, by Brian Biegel
- The Shot Heard ‘Round the World: The Novel, by Daniel Wyatt
- Pafko at the Wall: A Novella, by Don DeLillo
- The Home Run Heard ‘Round the World: The Dramatic Story of the 1951 Giants-Dodgers Pennant Race, by Ray Robinson
- The Miracle at Coogan’s Bluff, by Thomas Kiernan
