Tigers Star Catcher Bill Freehan Dies At 79 - Wrote One Of Baseball's Best Books

The 12-time All-Star catcher for the Detroit Tigers of the 60s and 70s passed away earlier this week at the age of 79. Here’s the obit from the Detroit Free Press.

Freehan finished in the top three for the AL MVP vote in 1967 and 1968. He took advantage of his fame by publishing Behind the Mask in 1970. The price of the book is mad crazy right now, ranging from almost $50-$160 online for the hardcover and paperback versions. Mitchell Nathanson writes about the “competition” between Behind the Mask and Ball Four, which came out the same year, in Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original.
