Lest we forget: J.R. Richard

August 5, 2021

The gigantic flamethrower for the Houston Astros in the 1970s passed away last night at the age of 71.

Richard, who won 20 games in 1976 and 18 for the next three seasons, saw his career struck short because of a stroke at the age of 30. Although he attempted a comeback, it never progressed very far and he found himself dealing with some hard times.

He twice struck out more than 300 batters and was an All-Star in his last year (he was 10-4 with an ERA of 1.90 at the time of his stroke. he also finished in the top ten for Cy Young three times.

Here’s his obituary from the Houston Chronicle.

Richard published his memoir with Lew Freedman in 2015
