Because you can keep a wine bottle on your bookshelf…
I had the opportunity to speak with Dusty Baker for my next book project. I already knew the Houston Astros manager owned an energy company in his native California. What I did not know is that he’s also a vintner (or at least he owns a winery; forgive me if I’m getting the terminology wrong. I know how exacting oenophiles can be).
The late Mets’ ace made his second career as a wine-maker. Took it very seriously, as reported in Bill Madden’s recent bio, Tom Seaver: A Terrific Life.
In fact, it’s surprising how many ballplayers are involved in this endeavor, whether as an owner/operators or merely to lend their names to a venture, including Kevin Youkilis, Ken Griffey Jr., David Ortiz, and Chipper Jones, just to name a few.
As I’m not a winer myself. I don’t know great from terrible, but I’m betting a lot of fans don’t either and buy bottles just for the souvenir factor.
