PSA for the PBBC – Sept. 4, 2020

September 4, 2020

Head Note: One of the thing I like about the Pandemic Baseball Book Club is that it’s a kind of “one stop shopping.” Instead of posting about various authors, projects, and events, all I’m doing here is cutting and pasting their newsletter. This one was received on September 2. Enjoy.

By the way, here are Bookshelf Conversations I’ve had with some of the authors associated with the PBBC:

NOW AT PBBCLUB.COM

There’s BIG news coming down the pike for the PBBC. We’re a few days away from the reveal, but be sure to keep an ear open for an announcement that will be a game-changer for your humble authors.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Like it or not, social media is part of the business of being an author. With that in mind, we asked our PBBC members to highlight some of their favorite Twitter accounts. Here’s a sampling:

“My indispensable Twitter feed is my friend Jayson Stark (@jaysonst). He entertains and piques my curiosity with his columns, and he’s terrific at finding the humor in the business of baseball. He’s really good at what he does (witness his J.G. Taylor Spink award in 2019), and though he’s a bit older than the typical Twitter power user (he turns 70 next year), he’s fully embraced the technology and frequently interacts with fans through it.”
-D.B. Firstman (@dianagram)

@sportcardbacks. If the front of the card is what catches your eye, it’s the back of the card that makes you stay awhile. This guy is hilarious, finding just the right mix of baseball card backs, with their quirky trivia and squinty fonts. Well worth the follow.”
-Brad Balukjian (@waxpackbook)

“The only good account on Twitter is @kothscreens which just shows random screencaps from King of the Hill episodes. It provides constant joy and zero opinions.”
-Eric Nusbaum (@enusbaum)

ON DECK AT PBBCLUB.COM
On the podcast, Ralph Carhart chats with Mark Healey about Healey’s book, Gotham Baseball. Give it a listen and be sure to let Mark know that, like Marty Appel, you think all of his picks for the all-time New York team are wrong. Available 9/3.

WHAT ELSE WE’VE BEEN DOING
With their escalating display of inside pitching and macho posturing, the Yankees and Rays are making sure Baseball Codes author Jason Turbow has plenty to write about.

Both Tyler Kepner and Jared Diamond look at the flurry of deals that were made at the trade deadline by the surging Padres.

Before the trade deadline, Dan Schlossberg made some guesses for Forbes as to which pitchers might find themselves with a new address. Take a peek, and see how close he got.

At The Hall BallRalph Carhart writes about the the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman, and how he and Jackie Robinson, whom Boseman played in the film 42, both impacted a generation of Black children.

Joan Ryan discussed the importance of team chemistry in appearances on a Linked In Live interview for the Public Affairs Council, as well as with the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. Joan will be appearing with fellow PBBC member John Shea on Sept. 3 at an event sponsored by Sausalito Books By the Bay. Register here.

Mitchell Nathanson appeared on the Danny Frank Show on Greater Northshire Access Television, discussing his book, Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original.

GREAT GEAR FOR GETTING AWAY
Summer’s not over, yet. Be sure to stop by our bookstore and swag shop for all the PBBC merch you’ll need to enjoy the end of the season in style, with a good book by your side.
