This would have happened anyway, to a degree, late March and April being the time when the media begins to offers lists of new and worthy baseball titles being released.
But with a lot of us having extra time on our hands, the collections are not limited to just those books coming out in 2020.
Herewith a brief sampling:
- The Red Seats Pub: What’s the best book about baseball? (From The Athletic)
- How to fill your stay-at-home days with the Rockies! (From PurpleRow.com, a Rockies-centric blog)
- A baseball-themed quarantine reading list (From TwinkieTown.com, a Twins-centric blog)
- The best books to read during the coronavirus on NL baseball teams, players (From the Vallejo Times-Herald
- San Diego sports figures share their favorite books to add to your reading list (From the San Diego Union-Tribune; not entirely baseball but close enough for jazz)
- Missing baseball during coronavirus shutdown? Here are 10 books to fill the void (From the San Francisco Chronicle)
- Baseball in the time of coronavirus (An opinion piece in the Cleveland Plain Dealer)
- Five baseball books to read while in quarantine (NBC Sports in Washington, DC)
Not surprisingly, many of the same titles — Moneyball, Ball Four, The Boys of Summer — keep popping up. I’m guessing any literate fan has already read these.
But this week alone I’ve received review copies of Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original, by Mitchell Nathanson; 24: Life Stories and Lessons from the Say Hey Kid, by Willie Mays and John Shea; Yogi: A Life Behind the Mask, by Jon Pessah; Future Value: The Battle for Baseball’s Soul and How Teams Will Find the Next Superstar, by Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel; and The Called Shot: Babe Ruth, The Chicago Cubs, & The Unforgettable Major League Baseball Season of 1932, by Thomas Wolf. So for me, as much as I loved some of those oldies but goodies, with so many new books coming out all the time, I’m not big on re-reading. But I guess for some it’s like comfort food, and we all can use some of that right now.
