Hold the butter

April 17, 2020

After the previous post, I decided to do a “baseball movie” search on Netflix to see what I could stream on my computer. Here are the results in the order they appear in the results, with some comments where warranted. Note that this was the exact search phrase used for these results. There are other baseball movies that, for some reason, weren’t connected.

  • Major League II
  • The Natural
  • Full Count: “When tragic events force an aspiring ballplayer to forgo his big league dreams and return home, saving the family farm gives him renewed purpose.” 2019. Category: Faith and spirituality. Acting quality: C-. Bookshelf assessment: Pass.

  • Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story. “Once at the top of his game. Brought down by a devastating injury. Now, he’s in the fight of his life to get back to major league glory.” 2018. Category: Documentary. Bookshelf assessment: And now for something completely different. Worth a watch.

  • Benchwarmers II: Breaking Balls. Not even gonna…
  • Brampton’s Own: “After 12 years in the minors, a struggling ballplayer retires, returns home and faces the last person he struck out with — his ex-girlfriend.” 2018. Bookshelf assessment: Not for me.

  • The Battered Bastards of Baseball. See previous entry. Bookshelf assessment: Must-see.
  • Weeds on Fire: “In 1980s Hong Kong, a school principal forms a baseball team with an eclectic crew of local students who soon fight their way to the top of the league.” 2016. Chinese with English subtitles. Bad News Bears + The Rookie? Bookshelf Assessment: Will give it a try.

  • Screwball: A steroid peddler explains how he went from an unlicensed anti-aging expert to the point man for the biggest scandal in baseball history.” 2018. Documentary. Bookshelf assessment: Been there, done that.

  • Hope: One in a Billion: “The remarkable true story of Gift Ngoepe, the first African to play for Major League Baseball, is counted in this inspiring documentary.” 2017. See, Late Life. Bookshelf assessment: Why not?
  • Jack of All Trades: “Once upon a time, baseball cards were as much an American pastime as the sport. But then scandal rocked the multi-million industry for good.” 2018. Documentary. Bookshelf assessment: Maybe, but certainly not top of the list.

  • 1 of 1: Genesis: Putting this here because it came up within the search term, but appears to have almost nothing to do with baseball. Bookshelf assessment: False advertising; pass.
  • The Bash Brothers Experience. One of those Lonely Island productions. Not even gonna, redux…
