Keep your politics out of my baseball

February 21, 2020

If you follow me on Facebook, you know where I stand on the current political situation: I hate it. It’s turned a lot of Americans into an “us-versus-them” with no compunction towards kindness and tolerance.

But I have tried to keep this blog politics-free. Or at least it was until CNN posted this piece explaining that the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal should not come as a great surprise.

Let’s face it, sign-stealing has been going on since there have been signs to steal. Does the use of technology make it any less palatable? Depends on whether you consider observing the competition to pick up “helpful hints.” Most agree that if you do it “manually,” that is, without the use of devices or electronics, it’s all right.

But over the last few years, such notions have gone out the window. Now, pretty much anything goes as long as the end justifies the means. Jim Crane, the team’s owner, semi-aplogized while at the same time claiming he should not be held accountable.

The Houston Astros' new manager, Dusty Baker, and team owner Jim Crane talk to reporters on Thursday in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Can you attribute the Astros’ behavior as a result of the person who sits in the Oval Office? Perhaps not. But there are a lot more people willing to let it go, just a they pass a blind eye to a lot of behavior exhibited by the current party in power.
