Why is it the older I get, the more events that transpired recently become “history.” Oh, wait, 1967. I guess that’s not exactly recent.

But books like Time Machine serve to make me feel old. Congrats.

And you know how I feel about superlatives in titles. The online Miriam-Webster Dictionary defines “ultimate” as “last in a progression or series; final.” So what does that mean? Will there never be another history of the Red Sox, or just no other carrying the same title?

Oh, but you want to know about the actual book. Okay, fine.

Gitlin, a veteran author an sportswriter according to the squib, packs a lot into this slim volume. Of the 22 chapters, 14 cover events that have taken place since the sixties. That’s catering to a specific demographic, one more attuned with recent doings rather than the totality of the franchise. And that’s fine.

I wonder what the market is for something like this? How many books about the Sox can you read? Don’t most fans know these stories? Well, as a Mets devotee, I can assure you that I read everything that comes out, taking the bad with the good. But Gitlin has an easy-going style, at once respectful and slightly sarcastic as he hits the low points as well as the high, that I find entertaining than educational. So while this might not be the actual “ultimate” volume, it will make a welcome addition to Red Sox Nation bookshelves everywhere.
